Hogan Yeung
Rank 1st
Auckland Grammar School
Age 18
NZEST scholarship subjects: Accounting, Chemistry, Calculus, Statistics, Physics
2002 - studying medicine at Auckland University

Hogan’s comments re NZEST exams: I found the NZEST exams good preparation for bursary as the material examined are mostly the same as bursary but just on a harder level. I think that NZEST exams are great in that they really test capable students whereas bursary does not. By taking the NZEST exams last year, the workload for preparation for bursary lightened a lot because I have already studied the material and taken an exam.

Comments from Headmaster, John Morris: Hogan has matured into a scholar of great versatility and quality and has various national qualifications and distinctions in sciences, humanities, commerce and mathematics to his credit. He was a member of the Chemistry Olympiad in 2001. Hogan played badminton and table tennis, served on the Headmaster’s Welfare Committee and was a member of the Asian Cultural Group. He also found time to be involved in the Peer Tutoring programme and Community Service projects for the school. Hogan’s teachers speak highly of his diligence, self-motivation and politeness and to sum up I would say he has been an ideal student.

John Jit-Shern Chen
Rank 2nd
Auckland Grammar School
Age 15
NZEST scholarship subjects: Latin, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Music
2002 - studying BSc and BMusic in piano performance at University of Auckland. His aim is to be a concert pianist.

John’s comments re NZEST exams:
The NZEST exam really challenged my analytical skills and my ability to apply basic knowledge. I had to think on a completely different level to bursary on most questions.

Comments from Headmaster, John Morris: John Chen has displayed an outstanding intellect and academic ability. He picks up new concepts very quickly and shows a depth of understanding uncanny for someone so young. He has also been one of the most talented musicians ever to come through the school, and has won every musical competition at Grammar. His support for the Concert Band and Orchestra have been unfailing. John’s musicianship, team spirit and desire to help have been hugely appreciated by all at the school.

Rosalind Phillips
Rank 5th
Havelock North High School
Age 18
NZEST scholarship subjects: Chemistry, History of Art, Calculus, Statistics, Physics
2002 - studying chemistry, maths and linguistics at Canterbury, hoping to complete honours degree in Chemistry.

Rosalind’s comments re NZEST exams: I think that the NZEST exams were certainly challenging, but in a way that helped to consolidate all that I had learnt in the year, and to stimulate new ideas and understandings of the concepts that were tested. They were also a great "warm-up" for bursary because sitting challenging exams inevitably increases one's understanding and confidence in the main areas of the syllabus. After sitting NZEST in the week immediately preceding bursary, I felt that my concentration was better and my study more focussed.

Comments from Principal, Bill Adams: Rosalind is an outstanding scholar who takes a real joy in learning. She has broad-ranging skills across the sciences and languages, and music is a very important part of her life – both piano and violin. She was selected for the Chemistry Olympiad in 2001. What makes Rosalind special, apart from her wonderful academic record, is her modesty and unassuming approach to her learning. She is adept socially, communicating very well with both her peers and teachers and her sense of humour is delightful.

Irene Ballagh
Rank 7th
Otago Girls’ High School
Age 17
NZEST scholarship subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Physics
2002 - studying Biochemistry, Anthropology, History and Politics at Otago University. Irene would like a career as an academic.

Irene’s comments re NZEST exams: I really liked the extension from the normal curriculum that NZEST offers, especially in subjects like English and Biology. It gives you a chance for more extensive reading around the subject, which was fascinating. The exams were also great preparation for Bursary, not just extra work.

Comments from Principal, Jan Anderson: During her impressive academic career Irene has won many national awards, such as a high distinction in the Australian Science Competition. She also achieved 100% in the Australian Chemistry Competition and was a member of the NZ Chemistry Olympiad Team. Irene is also a keen sportswoman, excelling in volleyball, rowing and soccer. She took part in Senior Drama productions and took a leading role in the Shakespeare Festival. She is academically gifted, perceptive and possesses superb skills in research.
