Award Ceremonies Subject Awards:
In 2001 there were 22 award ceremonies held throughout the country in the week December 10-14, culminating with the national award ceremony held at The Beehive in Wellington on Monday 17 December. The Lion Nathan Education Partnership organises the award ceremonies which are often hosted by the local mayor and council.

The award ceremonies are held one month after the completion of the examinations and are a highpoint in the academic calendar as they allow local communities the chance to acknowledge the success of their students. All NZEST awards are presented at the ceremonies and if a student is unable to attend, he/she must organise a member of their family or one of their teachers to collect their awards.

The top ten overall scholarship winners are flown to the national award ceremony in Wellington where they receive their scholarships from the Minister of Education.

Publicity

There were 46 newspaper reports giving publicity to the successful students and these may be read in the NZEST report.

There will be five Medallist Awards and NZEST acknowledges that these awards are for genuine all-round scholarship. A medallist will receive $500, which will be given in addition to a scholarship, plus a medal.
To qualify for a Medallist Award, a candidate must sit a minimum of five subjects, including two from Category A and one subject from Category B, and must be ranked in the top 30 scholars.
If a candidate sits more than five subjects, NZEST will count the five best subjects under the Medallist criteria. If a candidate is a Medallist one year, then he or she must include three new subjects in order to qualify as a Medallist in his or her second year.
