| The 2002 NZEST History of Art examination will follow the same format as that of the 2001 examination. Please note the colour plates will be printed in a lift-out resource section.
The exam will consist of twelve prescription options. Each option will have two parts: an essay question and a photograph question. Candidates will be required to answer four questions in total:
Candidates may select which questions to answer from the prescription options, but must answer a question from at least three of the prescription options. Each essay question will be worth 33 marks; each photograph question will be worth 17 marks. |

| The NZEST 2002 Japanese examination will have a similar format to that of 2001. There are two changes (indicated in red) in Questions 1 and 7.
Part A -- Aural Section (25 marks) Question 1 (5 marks) Candidates will hear 5 short passages from which they will extract the required information. Question 2 (10 marks) Candidates will listen to a recorded conversation in Japanese and will be provided with ten questions in English. They will answer these questions in English. Question 3 (10 marks) This will be ten multiple-choice type questions asking about the content of a recorded passage in Japanese. The questions will be written in English. Part B -- Written Section (75 marks) Question 4 (23 marks) A passage of approximately 700 characters in length and ten questions concerning its content, both in Japanese, will be provided. Candidates will be asked to answer each question in English. One more question will ask candidates to assign readings to some of the Chinese characters used in the passage. Question 5 (20 marks) Candidates will be asked to translate into English a passage in Japanese of approximately 600 characters in length. Question 6 (10 marks) There will be ten Japanese sentences which will contain multiple-choice, fill in the blank options. For each sentence, candidates will be asked to choose the option which will be grammatically and semantically coherent with the rest of the sentence. Question 7 (22 marks) GENKOYOSHI (Japanese squared writing papers) will be used for the essay writing. Candidates will be asked to write at least 400 Japanese characters, i.e. HIRAGANA, KATAKANA, KANJI as appropriate. Candidates will be marked on the range and accuracy of grammar, range and accuracy of vocabulary, coverage of given directions, logical flow and linkage of ideas, and usage of script. All script will be required to be well-formed. |

| The 2002 NZEST Latin Examination will have a similar format to that in 2001. Section A (60 marks) Question 1 A passage of Latin prose (30 marks) Question 2 A passage of Latin verse (30 marks) Section B (40 marks) Answer EITHER Question 3 OR Question 4 Question 3 -- Literary Studies (40 marks) Choose two literary topics and answer one from each. Each question is worth 20 marks.
Question 4 -- Grammar (40 marks) Answer both (a) and (b). Each question is worth 20 marks.

| The format of the 2002 NZEST Maori examination will be the same as the 2001 examination. Candidates write all answers in the combined question/answer booklet. The aural test will be taken first, followed by the written sections.
